Good To Know...

...that God is just as petty as man is, and will withhold salvation if you disagree with Him:

"The priest of the Manhattan church where Rudy Giuliani had his second wedding says he would deny the presidential contender Holy Communion because of his public support for abortion.
"Because he publicly is against church teaching, the answer would be no" if Giuliani requested the sacrament, said Msgr. Thomas Modugno.

"Pope Benedict further inflamed this issue with his comment this week that it is proper to refuse Communion to Catholic politicians who accept abortion."

Now I'm not going to sit here and quote scripture about how the church should be forgiving and tolerant--not because I know scripture (I don't)--but because, it's Christianity and well, it's sorta supposed to be about forgiveness and tolerance and all. But it seems really childish to withhold the sacrament. Like God's that kid on your block with the football and he won't let you play with it if you make fun of his pimples.

I'm not Catholic either - but I think the general Christian principle is salvation is available to those who ask for it. By deliberately rejecting church teaching - in essence choosing sin - it would be Guiliani who is declining to accept salvation, rather than the church declining to offer it.

The Bible verse is "for all have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God." (It's in there somewhere - I forget where). The bumper sticker phrase is "Christians aren't perfect - just forgiven." It's not the sin that excludes him - everyone sins. It's being aware of the sin, and choosing not to ask forgiveness or try and change. If the church knew you were violating some other tenet - say, committing adultery regularly and refusing to stop - they would presumably bar you from communion in that situation as well.

Thanks for the clarification. I still think it's just, I don't know, weird or something not to give a sinner communion, but then I'm not really a religious person so I don't get a whole lot of it.
