Cindy Sheehan arrested during the State of the Union for "protesting."

Right before the President's speech last night there were minor fireworks as two women, Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war activist and mother of a fallen American soldier, and Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Young of Florida, were tossed out of the House Chamber and arrested for "protesting."

You can read Cindy's account of the situation here:

Both women were bounced for wearing t-shirts. Cindy claims she was about to cover hers up, and was seized just as she was taking over her jacket, but Young didn't even think of covering up her t-shirt since it was a Pro-soldier shirt, which read "Support our Troops--Defending our Freedom." Also Rep Young, her husband, happens to be a big GOP congressman.

Man, are we in for some tough times in the future. Man, oh man.

Maybe this will finally convince enough Republicans that restricting free speech isn't such a good thing that the first Amendment will be slightly safer. But they are a ridiculously partisan party, as shown by the support of Alito by pro-choice republicans such as Specter and the numerous times last night when exactly half the room would stand up.

DC right now is completely partisan, but unfortunately last night gave Bush and the rest of the GOP a nice tower to come out and look civil (a word that Bush specifically used to demonize the Democrats). Sadly, I don't think this will be the spark to ignite a Free Speech debate since Sheehan has now gone on the outskirts of politics with her endorsement of Chavez. However with the so called Anti-Islamic cartoons, and the wiretapping scandal, more moderates will be more forthcoming in their opinions about this issue. One way or another this year will be a scorcher on the hill.
