Stephen Hawking says we should colonize space before we destroy the Earth. I agree, it would bring new jobs, and give hope to people that there can be a better future tomorrow. Perhaps we're so obsessed with land because we don't think they're any left. A space program, a real market based, comprehensive program, would be the defining moment of human history.
Of course we'd have to make sure the phrase "under God" is in the pledge of allegiance(http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2006/06/concerned_women.html) before we did that, because having that is really important.
